"Senior care" covers a wide range of options, and the words get used interchangeably even though they mean very different things. Here is a clean breakdown of what each type of care actually is and roughly what it costs in Southern California.

In-home care

A caregiver comes to your loved one's home to help with bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders, and companionship. Hours can scale from a few visits a week to 24/7 live-in care. Best for seniors who want to stay in their own home and need help with daily activities — not skilled nursing.

Assisted living

A residential community where seniors have their own apartment or room and trained staff handle medications, meals, and personal care. Best when staying home no longer feels safe or social, but skilled medical care is not yet required.

Memory care

A secured community designed specifically for residents living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. Staff are trained in dementia-specific care and the building itself is designed to prevent wandering. Often a wing inside an assisted living community.

Skilled nursing

Round-the-clock medical care provided by licensed nurses, typically after a hospital stay or for advanced medical conditions. Different from assisted living — this is a clinical setting, not a residential one.
